Agricultural Development in Bangladesh
Challenges & Solutions

Bangladesh is a agri-based country. 86% of its population dependent on agriculture directly or indirectly. So their development must be based on agriculture.

We focus the small holder farmers, especially marginal and landless farmer in Bangladesh, who are, who constitute about 90% of total farmer community. They have been suffering from the commercialization of agriculture which is being promoted by the national policies.

This agriculture is neither benefiting the farmers nor benefiting the consumers, because food that is being produced from this agriculture is not safe for the consumer, the farmers have to use huge of external input, chemical inputs, which are expensive. That’s why their cost of production is being increased.

They are not getting profitable price from the market because of the middleman control market system. On the other hand, the consumers are suffering from getting safe food because the, because of the same marketing system.

The government policy focus on the commercialization of agriculture which is based on chemical fertilizer and pesticides and other external inputs, which is very difficult for the farmer to afford.

It is much needed to change this system for their development. This is one thing.

Second thing, the food is being produced from this agriculture is not totally safe. The consumer are not getting safe food from this system because of the faulty production system based on agri-chemicals and also during processing and marketing supply chain, the food is being adulterated by the middleman. So consumer are not getting the safe food.

Especially the women farmer who are the main producer of organic food, they didn’t have any market to sell. Their issues, their demands need to be addressed in the national and global policy, which is not in present.

So we have been trying to link up with other farmer organizations to other networks at national level and international level to raise the issues of farmer rights and safe food, organic food, organic agriculture, and food security, climate change, etc.

We are continuously focusing the farmers issue at policy level.

We are hopeful that government is changing its policy towards organic agriculture and in future the government will invest more on organic agriculture and it will be a mainstream.
